Stoke on Trent Centenary Celebration Concert

A fantastic celebration of the 100 years since Stoke on Trent was formed.
Music includes British music all written whilst Stoke was a city, or has significance to the city. It features local composer Havergal Brian, pieces written by Edward Elgar for members of the Meath-Baker family who amongst other great acts of Philanthropy built and donated Fenton Town Hall to the people of Fenton, the Spitfire claims its place and we also commemorate Stoke's historic connection with Lidice. Bohuslav Martinu’s ‘Memorial to Lidice’ commemorates the Czech village of Lidice that was destroyed by the Nazis in reprisal for the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich in the late spring of 1942, which sparked a huge fundraising effort in our city and a friendship which has lasted to this day. Our programme also includes a very special performance by Nick Degg our Centenary Poet Laureate of his poem ‘I come from a town’ accompanied for the first time by a full symphony orchestra. The concert will be attended by the Lord Mayor of Stoke-on-Trent with other local dignitaries and several dignitaries from Czechia. NSSO is the original symphony orchestra of North Staffordshire, dating back to 1904, before the Charter was given. tickets are available on the door on 28th June and also on-line at the orchestra's website: www.nssoorchestra.co.uk.
